The yacht is like a holiday home on a sailing boat: calm and safe yet the Bavaria C42 boasts formidable speed and upwind ability. Well designed and conceived, a step forward for the first production unit with a scow bow. The boat has a single rudder blade, which is a rarity these days when twin rudder boats set the standard thanks to the design with very wide sterns. It is an achievement that the C42 sails so well and in full control even on the beam in windy conditions, demonstrating great stability also thanks to the chine hull that increases its shape stability. The design by Cossutti Yacht Design has a clever shape: it is the first Bavaria with a chine hull and rounded V bow, elements that make the difference, both below deck and in the water. It offers maximum space where it is most needed: cabins, saloon and cockpit. And despite some chines and small details, the shipyard should be commended for its greater attention to the quality of the finish. However, when you compete in this larger market - 40-foot family cruisers - you need something extra to stand out from the crowd. And in the case of the C42 it is the powerful yet stable hull form that combines with a generous sail plan for admirable performance and that gives sailors the direct steering feel of a single helm. The boat proves to be well-manned and comfortable with 100 square metres of canvas, an ambitious sail plan for a family boat. The precise and light-touch steering adds to the pleasure of sailing. With optional winches the ergonomics of the cockpit allow for shared tasks in the manoeuvres – the way most people like to work on deck. The interior also follows the traditional layout, but makes nice use of the extra space provided by the wider, more modern hull. The level of construction and finish is positively surprising.
