Near the center of Schiedam in the Nieuwe Haven, we offer the luxury motor Excelsior. The city center with historic buildings is within walking distance of the mooring. In addition, the Nieuwe Haven has good access via the Buitenhaven to the Nieuwe Maas or the Schie towards Delft.
The luxury motor Excelsior was built in 1924 in Papendrecht and still regularly navigates the inland waters, thanks to its powerful main engine, bow thruster, and spud poles. The raised decks provide ample functional living space in the former cargo hold.

Layout
From the main deck, there is a staircase through the hatch to the former cargo hold, where there is a spacious living room with an open kitchen. The many skylights make the whole very bright, and the wood stove provides nice warmth in the winter. Further forward are a spacious bedroom, bathroom with shower and toilet, and a large workshop under the foredeck. There is a passage made along the engine room from the living area to the wheelhouse, where there is a comfortable sofa with a view over the harbor.
The wheelhouse has recently been re-fitted and features a spacious sleeping area, a sitting room with a kitchenette, and space for a toilet.
Surroundings
The city of Schiedam is located between the cities of Rotterdam and Vlaardingen and has over 80,000 inhabitants. Schiedam is characterized by its historic city center and the tallest windmills in the world. Schiedam has an extensive public transport network with train, tram, bus, and metro connections.
In addition, Schiedam is characterized by its location on the Nieuwe Maas and the Schie. The city has several harbors (canals), where the Excelsior is moored in the Nieuwe Haven. Just south of the mooring is the oldest city park in the Netherlands: De Plantage. Ideal for a walk with the dog.
History of the ship
The luxury motor was built in 1924 at a coaster shipyard in Papendrecht with the current dimensions and a cargo capacity of 169 tons. The ship was built on behalf of the Panman family from Delfzijl and was named Onderneming. In 1927, the ship was officially registered. The ship was equipped with a loading and unloading mast and a two-cylinder engine from the brand Skandia. At that time, they made about 12 trips a year. They transported bulk goods such as fertilizers, sand, gravel, and animal feed. At one point, Mr. Panman's daughter took over the ship from her father. They sailed with the ship until 1986. In 1957, the loading and unloading mast was removed from the ship. In 1964, Kalff decks were also installed. Around 1956, a tea hut was placed to create space in the wheelhouse. The toilet had to be placed in the tea hut. In 1960, the sides of the wheelhouse were renewed. The wheelhouse has remained largely the same. In 1974, the old two-cylinder engine was replaced by a DAF 575 with turbo. In 1986, the ship was sold out of the family to a schoolmaster in Leiden. He named the ship Pieterdina. In 2000, the ship was sold again, and it was named Catharina. Since 2003, it has been owned by the current owners.
Technology
The current owners have owned the ship since 2003 and have taken good care of it. Navigationally, the ship is top-notch, with a good ship engine, bow thruster, and the 2 spud poles from Boterman.
The wheelhouse has recently been redesigned, with a lowered steel floor and new frames with double glazing installed. The original paneling has also been largely restored.
The battery pack was replaced in 2023 with a traction set, which is charged by solar panels and the wind generator. In 2024, the ship was re-certified and has CVO/CBB/ES-C until 2031.
Mooring
The mooring is entered into for an indefinite period with the Schiedam association 'het Beurtschip'. This association rents the water from the municipality of Schiedam and manages 10 moorings. The infrastructure and maintenance are carried out by the moorers/members of the association.
The rent for the mooring is €750 per year, of which €100 is reserved for maintenance. A one-time contribution to the association is €2000.
