Jeanneau has always had a model(s) of great popularity in its catalog around 32 feet. In this length between 9 and 9.5 m, the shipyard in Les Herbiers has achieved several of its best commercial successes.Back in the seventies, a star model from Jeanneau was the Folie Douce (later called Brin de Folie), a 9-meter design by P. Harlé of which more than 800 units were sold.
The Sun Odyssey 32 impresses with its spaciousness, both on deck and inside. Its considerable 3.30 m beam and high freeboard achieve comfortable accommodation and a ceiling height that remains at 1.88 cm even in the fore cabin. The single layout proposes a good owner's cabin in the stern with a 1.50 x 1.90 m berth arranged across, an exemplary kitchen in size and layout, and a bathroom located – as in larger lengths – flanking the stern cabin. The salon, whose benches can occasionally be used as berths, allows seating for six crew members around the table, and the fore cabin is also sufficient in size and stowage capacity. The weakest point of the accommodation is the navigator's area. The chart table is small, uncomfortable with the heel, oriented towards the stern, and its limited space for housing instruments is exposed to splashes from the kitchen sink. There is also a lack of more stowage capacity for small items in the salon, with only two tiny lockers on the sides apart from the chests under the benches. On deck, the Sun Odyssey 32 looks like a larger boat than 32 feet. The side passages are wide, and the anchor locker (optional windlass) compensates for its shallow depth with notable width. The cockpit is very generous in width, with long side benches and a removable bench at the stern that clears the way to the swim platform. The stowage is also very correct in the locker under the starboard bench, with another locker for the gas bottle. The standard steering is entrusted to the tiller, the best option in these lengths, leaving the ST winches for the genoa within reach of the helmsman.
One problem with the Sun Odyssey 32 is that its marked pure cruising orientation, combined with a desire to save on the final price, led the shipyard to a series of choices that sometimes seem contrary to the announced goal of comfort. The specialized nautical press commented at the time that a draft of 1.50 m with a ballast that barely reaches 30% of the displacement is little to squeeze the performance potential of the hull of the Sun Odyssey 32 or to control the boat calmly when the wind rises, even considering that the sail area does not reach 50 m2 when beating. The absence of a mainsheet traveler in the standard equipment, the shroud anchors on the sides limiting the coverage of the genoa, or a single-speed winch to handle all the mast maneuvers are economical options, but they do not contribute precisely to the comfort of maneuvering, not to mention the footrest on the floor, much missed in a cockpit with its benches separated by more than a meter. The Sun Odyssey 32 is the ideal boat for those who find comfort synonymous with comfort in port and at anchor. Five or six people will feel very comfortable living aboard this modern design boat in all its parameters and with a construction quality beyond doubt. Those who prioritize sailing sensations will have a harder time. The notable displacement, the limited sail area, the draft limitation, and a "minimalist" maneuver combine to hinder the potential of a hull designed to give much more.
