Introducing the 1989 Bruce Roberts Offshore 38, AQUARIUS — a proven bluewater cruiser with an overall length of 11.64 meters. Built with a robust steel hull, wing keel and full skeg, she offers excellent stability and performance under sail. She was built by John Cox—an Australian shipwright whose expertise was deeply influenced by his father, a master of wooden boats. The vessel was launched in Ballina, NSW, in 1989, and from the start, she was a labour of love. John used top-quality steel for the hull and superstructure, and his father completed the fit-out with beautiful recycled timber from historic vessels. Each piece of AQUARIUS carries stories from ships like the Sydney Harbour Ferry South Steyn and the legendary WW2 vessel, The Krait.
AQUARIUS is offered for sale by her second owners, who bought from John Cox in 1997. Over the years, she has demonstrated her capability as a dependable long-distance cruiser, having sailed extensively along the East Coast of Australia, through Indonesia, the East and West Coasts of Malaysia, Thailand’s West Coast, and as far as the Andaman Islands. Gary and Libby became especially fond of Langkawi and they and their yacht are well known here. A hefty refit was carried out in Langkawi in 2011 which included a full sand blasting to bare steel and re painting with AWLGRIP products. All deck hatches were replaced, portlights, and a modern anchor windlass were installed.
Since 2017, she has been laid up on the hardstand at Pangkor Island Marina, Malaysia, following a serious back injury sustained by Gary. Returning as often as they can, Gary and Libby have maintained their beloved yacht well and it was a tough decision to sell but AQUARIUS now awaits new adventurers to continue her cruising story.
