ESPERANZA has been extensively upgraded and modified to make it even more blue-water capable. She has proven her blue-water abilities by safely crossing the Atlantic (Bahamas to Italy) two times.
The current owner did a great job to build a "dream boat to sail around the world”. She has the capability to adapt to different countries (fully 115V and 230V redundant); and is capable of sailing in secluded regions for months without the need go back to port for refurbishing (she’s got solar, wind and hydro power). The vessel also comes with a very efficient water-maker powered by the well-maintained 12v electrical system.
Esperanza also comes with a West Marine 270 Inflatable with 3.5hp 4-stroke Tohatsu O/B Engine. There is a small crane near the stern as well to hoist the motor out of the dinghy.
She was recently surveyed in April of 2025, and here are some excerpts from the surveyor’s report:
Hull Originally built in 1975 as a GRP (polyester resin) hull, “Esperanza” has been rebuilt and entirely reinforced in 2007-2008 in all her underwater hull with the use of Epoxy Resin (Sicomin SR8500/SD8601-8605) and E- glass (Sicomin Bi Axial) from a level of 25cm above the waterline down to the cast iron keel. ?The thickness of the hull goes from around 9mm (at the topside) to about 18mm at the keel attachment. ?In 2016 the cast iron keel (2.5T) has been sanded and washed with acetone before the application of 3 layers of epoxy primer (Map Yachting EP213 HB). The topsides have been completely epoxy treated with two coats of Sicomin SR8500/SD8603 and two further coats of Map Yachting EP213 HB epoxy primer. On these, four coats of Map Yachting PU320 two-component polyurethane paint have been layered. The toe rails are painted in AWLGRIP two-component polyurethane paint. The bottom paint is made of 5 coats of copper coat executed in 2016.?Deck: Esperanza’s deck layout has remained the original as the Amel concept has proved to be very practical and efficient.The cutter rig has been achieved through the installation of a SS 316L plate at the bow and two additional rails to set the staysail(s) sheets inside the shrouds. ?Two additional winches have been installed on custom made aluminum supports at the cockpit. ?The original sliding window that was giving light to the salon and aft cabin have been replaced. The superstructure has been totally epoxied glassed and reinforced before the installation of four (4) Goiot Tradition hatches in the salon and four (4) more in the aft cabin. ?The forward cabin original two (2) Goiot hatches, while still functional and perfectly watertight, have been replaced with new Goiot Tradition hatches to uniform the deck exterior esthetic. ?The plexiglass of the fixed port-lights installed in the forward cabin and the NAV station have been replaced with thicker LEXAN sheets. These, while are slowly suffering from opacification due to their exposure to UV rays, are of a much higher degree of resistance and durability. ?The original hard top plexiglass structure has been replaced. In the place of the plastic structure a custom-made Carbon/FBG one has been built and glassed to the original hard top. All the plexiglass has been replaced. This construction is extremely rigid and long lasting. ?The top rail/stanchions system has been replaced in 2016 with a new one in SS 316L respecting shape and size. All the stanchion feet have been replaced and reinforced on their foot connection where the stress is, usually, the most. This design guarantees a very long operational life. ?A new bow pulpit has been built in SS 316L to include the bowsprit and the forestay. ?All the hardware and fittings are installed on epoxy built supports to avoid flush holes that can be prone to water infiltrations. The utmost attention has been devoted to ensure a correct water flow on the deck and the absence of dangerous standing waters. ?The decks and superstructures have been completely repainted in 2014. The surface has been washed and then acetone rinsed. Three coats of Map Yachting EP213 HB epoxy primer has been followed by four coats (in certain areas more) of Map Yachting PU320 two-component polyurethane paint to complete the finishing work. ?Rigging and Ropes Esperanza’s rigging has been modified and redesigned, the works have started in June 2013 and ended in August 2015. ?The original sail plan had a main, mizzen and furling genoa (130%) with the addition of an adjustable stay rigged to a pad eye at the bow. ?A custom built 1.3 m cylindrical (structural) bowsprit made in carbon fiber (diameter 120 to 100 mm, wall thickness 10mm) and covered by a 3mm fiberglass layer to avoid contact with any SS hardware has been installed at the bow. The genoa rig point has been moved to its forward end and a 2nd and 3rd rig points have been added for adjustable stays so that Esperanza can be sailed with the furling genoa (130%) in light winds (up to 18kts) and then as a cutter with two hanked-on fore sails when higher wind speeds request it. ?The forward adjustable stay is equipped with a Wichard ratchet adjuster and the lower stay with a Wichard wheel adjuster and both are connected to the deck and bowsprit chainplates through Wichard HR SS 16mm shackles. ?The lower stay is coupled with two synthetic (dyneema) backrunners that are attached to the outer rails and tensioned through a fiddle blocks system. ?The bowsprit end is equipped with a SS 316L crane iron (wall thickness 6mm). All the rigging (stays, whisker shrouds, bobstay) is attached to it through Sta-lock terminals and turnbuckles. ?All rigging wires have been replaced in 2015 and it is all in SS 316L with diameter sizes increased of 1mm for each wire in respect to the original plan. All rigging is equipped with SS 316L Sta-Lock swageless terminals and chrome bronze Sta-Lock turnbuckles. ?Both masts heads have been replaced with custom made marine aluminum ones with oversized wall thickness. Besides, nylon/FBG mast steps have been installed on both masts. ?The mizzen mast has an adjustable backstay in dyneema rope (not an original Amel feature) which is connected to two stern platforms. This design ensures much more stiffness and stability to the mizzen mast. The main forestay is equipped with a Reckman RS2000/20 manual furling system. ?All ropes are from Gleistein Ropes, Marlow Ropes and New England Ropes and have been rigged in 2016. The halyards, boom vangs, outhauls are in dyneema/polyester, while the rest are in polyester/polyester. ?The utmost effort has been made in keeping all cordage of traditional color (hemp, bronze, black) with the minimum allowance for other colors when indispensable. ?A major effort has been made to avoid any potential galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals (mostly SS 316L and Aluminum alloy) in all the rigging and deck hardware installation through the extensive use of Tefgel isolating product. ?Sails and Deck Hardware: Esperanza is a ketch rig and her basic sailplane is made of a full battened Mainsail (3-reef), full battened mizzen (2-reef) and a 130 % furled genoa. Besides those, three different sizes Yankees and two different sizes Staysails can be hoisted on the two adjustable stays. ?Esperanza has also a mizzen staysail, an Asymmetrical Spinnaker (2002) and a Symmetrical Spinnaker (age unsure, probably original or end 80s). All sails, but the two Spinnakers, have been custom made by Mack Sails (Stuart FL, USA) in 2014 (rigged in 2016) using Challenge Premium Dacron cloth and High-quality heavy-duty hardware. The traditional appearance has been achieved both through the proper sail cut and using “Tanbark” and “Egyptian cream” cloth. On the deck, the sails sheets are brought to three different rails (starboard and port) from Goiot. ?The winches are all Lewmar Ocean type. The sheets and the mainsail halyard are set by self-tailing two-speed winches while the rest of the two masts winches are simple one-speed type. ?All the deck blocks are Lewmar HTX type and have been sized accordingly to the cordage used. ?All the winches and blocks are new and installed on Esperanza in 2016. ?Interiors and Accommodations:Esperanza’s interior and accommodations have been rebuilt and/or replaced between 2013 and 2015. The boat interior has been completely stripped and a layer of corkwood (6mm) has been epoxy glued to the inner topsides and the superstructures for sound and thermal insulation. In the aft cabin the insulation layer has been extended to the ceiling and the bulkheads. ?In the salon, a number of lockers and drawers in solid mahogany have been added to increase the storage capabilities. Also, the salon, the forward cabin and the aft cabin inner topsides are covered by slats of solid mahogany. ?c. All the boat’s original synthetic foam-backed liners and headliners have been removed and replaced by plywood painted with four coats of Interlux perfection two component polyurethane paint. All the wooden structures and frames have been varnished in 2016 with four coats of International Perfection plus two-component polyurethane varnish. All the dome lights and the reading lights have been replaced in 2016. Many light points have been added to improve the interior lighting. Also, two 3 speed fans have been installed in each cabin and in the salon plus one in the galley. ?All the seats and mattresses have been replaced with Latex/High density Foam mattresses custom made in 2013 and stored until the boat launch in 2016. ?Engine and Propulsion:The engine is a Yanmar 4JH2-TE manufactured in 1996 and completely rebuilt in 2013. It has been installed onboard on 2015 and has, presently, 546 hours. The gear/transmission is the original Borg-Warner velvet drive 72C with a ratio of 2.91:1, the transmission has been totally serviced before the installation of the new engine onboard. ?The original propeller, shaft and stuffing gland have been replaced in 2016 with new equipment. ?The new 3-blade fixed bronze propeller is connected to the transmission through a 30mm diameter Aquametic 22 shaft. The stuffing gland is a dripless/graphite type water cooled by the circulating sea water from the engine pump. ?Electric system:All electric system components were replaced between 2014 and 2015 with new flexible copper tinned wiring (Ancor). Extreme attention has been given to the separation of the cables in appropriate conduct and the sizing of each wire which is larger in diameter than needed. The system’s wirings are following the ABYC color code (12VDC: Red-Pos / Blk-Neg; 110VAC/220VAC: Blk-Phase/Wht Neutral/Grn Ground). ?Esperanza has a 12V DC system for her services and also 110V and 220V AC systems for her shore power supplies. These two systems are completely separated and redundant; Esperanza is able to have all her AC power services running in any country disregarding if the official AC power is 110v or 220V. ?Battery System: 1 x AGM Lifeline GPL-31XT - 12V-125Ah (Engine starting) ?5 x AGM Lifeline GPL-31XT – 12V-125Ah (Services – Total capacity: ?625Ah) ?Both battery packs are linked to a Xantrex Link Lite device which gives the boat owner the possibility to monitor constantly Voltage, Amperage, charge intensity and charge state. ?Charging system: Xantrex Trucharge2 60A – 110VAC/220VAC to 12VDC (Shore power). The charger is fully monitored and operated through a remote panel installed in the NAV station. ?Electromaax Aquamaax 160A-12V Alternator (Engine - services alternator) ?Electromaax Aquamaax 80A-12V Alternator (Engine - starting alternator) ?These alternators are fully 3-stage regulated and redundant through the main battery switch so that any failure of one of the two won’t interfere with the capability of the engine to start and charge both battery packs. The alternator state and charge output are monitored through a remote display in the NAV station. ?2 x 90W Innova Solar panel + Blue Sky Energy Solar Booster 2000E MPPT solar charge controller. This device optimizes the solar charge and actually increases it of about 25%. ?LVM Aerogen 6 Wind generator ?LVM Aero/Aquagen 4 Wind/Hydro generator, ?f. Both the above devices are installed and in use. They are equipped with regulators and heat disperser for overcharge and they can be monitored through a dedicated ammeter display in the Nav station. The hydro generator has a plug-in receptacle installed on the stern pushpit that makes it a throw-in-the-water-ready-to-use device. Other systems: Xantrex ProSine 12VDC > 220VAC 1800W Inverter with remote panel (NAV station). ?Krieger Up/Down Transformer (220V to 110V; 50 to 60 Hz) ?Ground and NEG systems: The 12VDC system is linked to NEG studs and to the engine/prop shaft and connected to two sacrificial anodes (one installed on the hull and one on the propeller cone). ?The 110VAC/220VAC systems are shielded by a ProMariner ProSafe FS60 Galvanic Isolator against stray currents and galvanic corrosion. All the boat metal (bronze) seacocks and thru-hulls are connected to the ground system and to the sacrificial anode on the hull. ?Electronics--Navigation: B&G H3000 Hydra processor system which includes Depth, Speed, Barometric and Wind sensors. The sensors are linked to analog displays of the same Hydra system (Speed, AWS, AWA, Depth). ?Zeus Z8 GPS Chart Plotter ?B&G H3000 ACP2 Autopilot (with MOB emergency button) and T2 ?Pilot Ram. ?B&G Gimballed Rate Compass ?B&G Broadband 4G Radar ?Communication: ?VHF Radio ICOM IC-M604 ?AIS type A and B receiver ICOM MXA-5000 ?SSB Radio ICOM IC-M802 + ICOM AT-140 HF Automatic Antenna ?Tuner ?SCS DR-7400 Pactor 4 modem linked to the SSB radio for emails and ?weather forecasts. Leisure: ?Clarion Radio/Stereo (Two salon speakers) ?Fresh water system, Heads and Plumbing:Esperanza’s fresh water system was fully replaced in 2015 and it’s built with Whale 15mm rigid pipes and quick fittings. The hot and cold-water circuits have valves that allow the use of the forward and aft areas separately in case of a leak. The system is run by a Shurflo Aquaking pump (12V) ?Water capacity: 470 liters in the original keel-placed tank ?Water heater: Isotherm 20L Slim 750W – Engine connected and electric element (110VAC through shore power or Transformer) ?Esperanza is also equipped with a Katadyn Power Survivor 80E watermaker. This system is run by the 12 VAC system and can produce up to 3.4 US Gls (13 liters) per hour of fresh water. It is extremely power efficient and its consumption of 8A makes it possible to be run while sailing without the aid of the engine. The main (forward) head is equipped with a custom made (epoxy FBG) waste tank which is installed between the toilet WC and the discharge thru-hull. It is issued with a RM69 marine toilet (manual), while the aft cabin has a wc (under a seat locker) with a RM Sealock marine toilet (manual). ?All the seacocks and thru-hulls are made of high-grade marine bronze from GROCO. The thru-hulls are flanged and bolted to the hull through backing pads custom made in epoxy FBG. All the thru-hulls are connected to the ground system. ?The bilge is drained by a Jabsco Utility Puppy 3000 12V pump connected to a Ultra Safety System Ultra Bilge Pump Switch floating switch and has a Henderson Mk5 manual pump as back up. The boat is also equipped with a drain system connected to the engine sea water pump that allows the bilge to be evacuated in case of a major water entry into the vessel. ? Galley and Refrigeration:The galley is equipped with an ENO Grand Large (2-burners+oven) ?gas cooker purchased in 2014, but installed only in 2016. ?The LPG system has been rebuilt in 2016 in copper pipe and it is activated and monitored by a Trident Marine LPG gas control and detection system. This includes a control/alarm panel, a solenoid switch and three detectors. ?Esperanza is equipped with two fridges. The original in the galley and a second one created in the original ice-box under the navigation table. ?Main fridge: 45l capacity box. Frigoboat Frigomatic K35F with 160F evaporator plate ?Fridge/Freezer: 80l capacity box. Frigoboat Frigomatic K35F with 160H evaporator/freezer box. ?f. Both these systems are keel cooled and have no need for a recirculation pump. They have proved to be extremely efficient and reliable. Anchoring:The anchor rode is formed by 50m of 10mm galvanized chain and about the same length of 22mm 3-strand nylon mooring line. ?The anchor windlass is a new Lofrans Cayman 88 installed in 2016. ?Safety Equipment:Esperanza's standard safety equipment includes: Viking Life Raft type 6UKSL, 6-pax Off-shore rigid casing. ?ACR RLB-36 CAT I 406MHz EPIRB ?ACR PLB-350C 406MHz PLB (x2) ?Lifesling2 Overboard Rescue System & ACR SM-2 Crew Overboard ?Strobe Light ?West Marine 270 Inflatable with 3.5hp 4-stroke Tohatsu O/B Engine ?Others: The boat is equipped with a wind steering system Wind pilot Pacific Plus (Pendulum+Rudder type) which can be used also as an emergency rudder in case of failure of the main steering. Over-All Condition:The decks, structure, the steering gear were inspected visually. No deterioration was discovered, and all appeared to be in good condition. The Zinc bonding metal is in good condition, and there is no evidence of wear and tear between the joining of the mast and hull. ?All life-saving and apparatus are certified and they are in good condition. The anchor and its tackle were found to be in good working order. ?The overall condition of this Euros 41 monohull is “Above average” ?Recommendation(s):--None to be made at this time.
