This inboard powered Cornish Shrimper 19 MkII is a great of this extremely popular class. The Shrimper's popularity is born from her high build quality, charming looks, ease of handling and the ability to explore shallow waters not accessible to fixed keel craft. The Cornish Shrimper is also very popular for racing, and "Ruth" has a proven pedigree in this regard.
The MkII version of the Shrimper 19 retains the gaff-rigged character of the original design, while introducing practical refinements to rigging, systems and handling — making her easier to manage and more versatile for short-handed cruising.
"Ruth" is fitted with tan North Sails, Coppercoat antifouling, Yanmar 1GM10 diesel engine, NASA Target 2 depth finder, VHF Radio, gas cooker and portable toilet.
The combination trailer is available by separate negotiation

My wife and I have enjoyed racing dinghies together since 1980, when we started in a National 12. After moving to Poole in 2002 we joined the Flying Fifteen fleet at Parkstone Yacht Club — wonderful boats and a fantastic class to be involved with. About seven years later, with family commitments increasing, we decided that a MkII Cornish Shrimper would suit our sailing perfectly.
We bought Ruth from a member of Poole Yacht Club who had owned her from new, and since then she has raced regularly, typically twice a week during the season.
I last raced Ruth in 2022 when we won:
Monday Summer Series
Wednesday Summer Series
Wednesday Autumn Series
Poole Week
As a result, Ruth has always been maintained to the standard required of a successful racing boat. When racing seriously I would normally buy a new set of sails every two years, as there was always a good market for the used ones through Cruising Shrimpers. Over time we experimented with sails from a number of manufacturers before settling on North Sails, which we found performed best. While white sailcloth can offer a slight performance advantage, we felt it detracted from the traditional appearance of the Shrimper fleet — and there is something rather special about seeing a line of Shrimpers under tan sails rather than a mixture of colours.
I have also taken care to maintain the spars properly. Periodically I would remove the fittings, rub the spars down thoroughly and apply several coats of Sikkens, paying particular attention to sealing around the hounds so that water could not work its way behind the collar. In my experience this treatment has proved more durable than traditional varnish.
Most of the halyards and sheets have been upgraded with colour-coded ropes so that the crew can easily distinguish between the different lines, and the main jib cleats have been upgraded to Harken units rather than the standard Barton fittings.
Of course the MkII Shrimper is also a wonderfully versatile boat. The additional four inches of headroom in the cabin compared with the MkI is very welcome, and Ruth benefits from a table that can be used either inside the cabin or in the cockpit well. There are many delightful places to explore in a Shrimper, from Arne and Wareham up the River Frome to a trip round to Swanage when conditions allow.
The PortaPotti has seen very little use, and the gas stove has rarely been used beyond occasionally boiling a kettle when we went for a picnic. Below the waterline the hull has been kept clean either by pressure washing when lifted by the yard’s straddle carrier, or by a diver while she was in the marina.
I have now reached the end of my racing career, but Ruth remains ready to give plenty of enjoyment to her next owners.
