Great success has been achieved at the Antigua Classics since 2002. Six time winner of Boat International Concours d’Elegance. Multiple class winner and three time overall schooners winner. Restoration and Refit
Originally a composite hull of Pitch Pine planking on steel and oak frames Charm III had a planked deck of long leaf yellow pine. These craft were not built with longevity in mind. Rapidly built to suit the expectations of men who wanted to race. However she is now the ripe old age of 96 and still going strong.

Hull – Underbody & Topsides
Complete replacement of all frames steam bent French oak inside the original hull. New massive Iroko floor timbers bolted through keelson into iron ballast. All new 45mm Iroko planking copper riveted. Top three strakes scarfed to full length. New transom, horn timber and deadwood. New stem.
Deck
New deck beams. Two laminations 15mm ply with 15mm teak planking. Original teak deck house restored and retained
Rig
All new standing rigging 10mm ss by Scheepstuigerij Jan Hofstede, Netherlands.
All new deck fittings by KVF Stanfit BV Netherlands
Masts
Original 1928 hollow Sitka spruce masts restored. New main and staysail booms.
Running Rig
All new halyards, sheets etc
Interior
All new teak and mahogany interior with open Caribbean friendly layout.
Annual Haul Outs
Charm III is hauled out in St. Maarten every year from end June to November. All systems are checked and any upgrades are performed. And of course endless varnishing.
New antifouling annually.
2018
Following catastrophic boat yard damage two new masts were built of Alaskan Sitka spruce.
2019 -2021
Refit Antigua – Woodstock Boatbuilders
Removal of interior furniture port side to facilitate installation of new frames. Engine removal for access to area for new frames. Reinstall furniture. Remove all paint from hull. Rake out all seams and re-caulk with cotton
History

The "Four" had such winning ways that few changes were made to MALABAR V. Her ends were lengthened slightly and she was given a bit more freeboard for dryness, while a larger percentage of her ballast was assigned to the keel. ( Cliff Swaine says that Alden figured he made a mistake drawing out the bow of the "FIVE" without sufficiently lengthening the stern.) Otherwise, the two schooners were much alike, even in their accommodations. There was little difference in rig, except that the "FIVE" was given slightly more sail area, but with a smaller topsail. A departure from Alden's previous thinking is evidenced by the fact that MALABAR V was the first of the series to be built with an engine, a Scripps F-4 driving a feathering propeller. This schooner's design number is 215. She measures 49 feet, by 36 feet 9 inches, by 12 feet, by 7feet 3 inches. One sister (Charm III) was built for a Swedish owner. Like her immediate predecessor, the "FIVE" did very well racing, winning eight out of eight starts in 1924, but her record is somewhat less impressive because she did not sail in the prestigious Bermuda Race that year.
John Alden’s beautiful designs are instantly recognisable . Charm III first appears on the British Register in 1932 in the name of a “gentleman member of The Royal Corinthian Yacht Club”, a Mr. Harry Skeet Broom. This interestingly is reaffirmed in the Register dated 1941. There is no surviving record of the war years. She changed hands in 1946, 1947, 1953, 1955, 1961, 1964 and finally in July 1980 to the current owner.
Charm III has been owned and much loved by her current owners since 1980.
Back in the 50’s and 60’s she was cruised on the Clyde and Scottish coast becoming a well known visitor. She was bought by the current owners in the Yealm River close by Plymouth in England in 1980. She had been a presence in the Yealm since 1964.
