The 1,056-horsepower engine boasts Electronic Diesel Control and supercharging.MAN's target of 100 metric horsepower per cylinder across its complete marine range was fulfilled with the introduction of the D2840 LE 403 model.It may appear that this model is the last one of the series to be uprated, whereas it is actually the first model of a new generation series. Producing 5 percent more power (104-horsepower per cylinder), than the rest of the engines in the series, it also premieres Electronic Diesel Control on a MAN marine engine.The four-stroke marine diesel D2840 LE 403 model has a bore and stroke of 128 mm x 142 mm and two banks of five cylinders arranged in a 90-degree V, giving a total swept volume for the engine of 18.27 liters. The dry weight without transmission is 3,439 pounds (1560 kg). The twin turbochargers with Wastegate allow the boost pressure to become effective at a lower engine speed, while preventing over pressure at higher rpm. A two-stage intercooler ensures optimum intake air temperature at all times. Supply of fuel to a number of cylinders is suppressed during operation at low engine speeds or low load conditions to artificially increase loading of the working cylinders to ensure complete combustion.The power output of the LE 403 at 1,035 horsepower is 28 percent more than its LE 401 predecessor rated at 809 horsepower, both at the same engine speed of 2,300 rpm. To achieve this substantial increase in output power, many changes were required. Should circumstances necessitate reducing engine power, it operates drectly on the mechanical Bosch RP48 injection pump unit. Sensors monitor the engine parameters of: engine rpm, oil pressure, coolant temperature and level, inlet air temperature, alternator output. Optional sensors monitor gearbox oil pressure and temperature, engine coolant flow, fuel pressure, and injection pipe leakage. Failures are announced by a horn sounding, and a flashing LED indicating which parameter is causing the problem. Simultaneously the engine rpm is reduced to a safe level.The BE1 unit is pre-wired and consequently easy to install and does not require additional wiring between the engine room and control position. More than one control panel with indicating LED's can be fitted for example at the main steering position and flybridge.
