Coming in at just under 60’ the 565 was Rob Humphreys’ replacement for his Oyster 575, and is our G6, or sixth generation deck saloon design. He incorporated a number of new features on the 565; a longer waterline with plumb bow which allows for a bowsprit for the anchor and simplifies the handling of downwind sails, a sleek profile with flush foredeck, twin rudders and our popular seascape windows to the owner’s stateroom. The rig was also updated with swept back spreaders, a larger mainsail and smaller headsail for optimum sailing performance and ease of handling shorthanded.
The 565 is a proven circumnavigator, offering luxurious accommodation for up to seven in four cabins, and plenty of space for the equipment that makes living aboard a pleasure; generator, washer/dryer, air-conditioning, watermaker, and heating for example. The 565 is perhaps the sweet spot in size for those seeking a capable bluewater cruiser which is easy to handle for a couple.
Rock Lobster IV was specified by an experienced yachtsman for the 2024-25 Oyster World Rally, with a view to later cold-water cruising. She was carefully prepared and has been cared for during the Rally and subsequently. Rock Lobster IV is ideal for a future world rally, or other long-range cruising. Unusually she is ‘deemed UK VAT paid’ by HMRC which allows her the freedom to sail in UK waters without generating a UK VAT liability, and she is also entitled to new standing rod rigging under an existing Oyster warranty commitment.
Rock Lobster IV would repay an early viewing!
Note - UK VAT paid (if sold in UK waters only).
1. CONSTRUCTION
HULL NUMBER
Oyster 565/14.
HULL CONSTRUCTION
Moulded in FRP from computer-controlled cut female moulds, built under the close supervision of the Oyster Design and Technical Offices and Lloyd's Register Surveyors to ensure a smooth and accurate finish. The structural design has been engineered to meet the Lloyd s Register Special Service Craft Rule to ensure a strong, rigid and weight efficient structure. The lay-up specification is calculated to meet and exceed ISO12215 standards.
Structures are hand laminated under carefully controlled and monitored conditions. Mast and aft keel bulkheads are cored, vacuum infused composite construction, with other bulkheads in BS1088 marine plywood.
Hull laminated using vinylester resin. The outer topside finish is a white NPG resin gelcoat, which has excellent UV resistance and waterproofing qualities, and is suitable for use in a tropical environment.
Laminate material comprises a combination of E-glass multi-axial fabrics with unidirectional carbon fibre along the primary load-paths and in high-stress areas. This custom laminate offers significant weight savings with strength and stiffness advantages over a traditional GRP construction. Using carefully specified unidirectional, biaxial, triaxial, and quadraxial fabrics selected to respond to localised stress requirements, the design produces a tough and weight efficient structure with higher fibre to resin ratios than a conventional laminate.
Above the waterline the topside laminate is a high-tech, cored structure in E-glass providing strength, stiffness and insulation. Below the waterline, the hull features a monolithic (single-skin) composite laminate forward of the aft keel bulkhead, reinforced with stringers and floors. Aft of the keel the hull area is a cored structure, with core replaced locally with structural in-fills for penetrations and other specific areas of structural support.
Additional reinforcements using a combination of vacuum infused L-beam girders and top hat foam cored girders are included in the way of the keel recess, the keel longitudinals, mast step area, P-bracket, and chainplates. Primary structure is constructed using unidirectional carbon fibre cappings. The transverse keel floors are biaxial E-glass web plates reinforced with carbon fibre.
The structure supporting the main V1 and D1 chainplates is constructed from unidirectional carbon fibre, bonded to the hull skin to give a strong and stiff structure.
Limber holes and/or tubes are installed at appropriate points.
HULL FINISH
White hull with cove line and double boot top lines in black blue.
Coppercoat anti-fouling.
DECK CONSTRUCTION
The deck is moulded in FRP with a white gel coat finish to the cockpit and coachroof, the deck is a PVC foam sandwich structure for strength and insulation. Resin infused glass/carbon fibre L-beams below the deck provide support to the heavily loaded parts of the structure. In load bearing areas the core is replaced with solid material for additional strength. All load bearing fittings have backing plates.
The deck sits on a return flange moulded into the hull. The flange is sealed and glued with high-performance adhesive and secured with stainless steel fasteners.
DECK FINISH
Weather deck and cockpit areas have teak decking with black colour caulking.
