DescriptionThe Pacific 38 has earned an enviable reputation as a capable and reassuring offshore cruising yacht, and this particular example appears to embody many of the qualities that have made the design so highly regarded amongst serious sailors.

Built by Smiths Boatyard in New Zealand to the Claude Allen Smith design, she offers the kind of robust construction, practical layout and sea-kindly characteristics that are becoming increasingly difficult to find in modern production yachts.

Stepping aboard, it is clear that this yacht has benefited from knowledgeable ownership and continuous maintenance. Significant investment has been made in recent years, including replacement standing rigging in 2021, a mast inspection undertaken during the winter of 2021/22, a replacement boom, regular sail servicing and ongoing routine maintenance. The engine was serviced in April 2026, while antifouling and anode replacement were carried out during 2025.

The sail wardrobe is particularly impressive, with mainsail, furling headsail, staysail, storm jib, cruising chute and spinnaker all included, offering excellent flexibility whether coastal cruising or undertaking longer passages.

On deck, the windvane self-steering system, electric windlass with Rocna anchor and substantial chain, together with a sensible deck layout, reinforce the boat's credentials as a genuine cruising yacht capable of looking after her crew when conditions become more challenging.

Below decks, the traditional interior provides comfortable accommodation for up to six people across three cabins. The saloon feels warm and inviting, with the practical advantage of a Taylors paraffin cooker and oven replacing the original gas installation, a feature often appreciated by long-distance cruisers. The layout offers good storage, comfortable living space and all the facilities required for extended periods aboard.

One feature that particularly caught my attention was the well-thought-out renewable energy system, with wind generation protected by a substantial dump resistor arrangement designed to safely manage excess output during periods of high wind. This reflects the practical approach taken by the current owners and their focus on reliable cruising systems.

Overall, this is an honest and well-equipped cruising yacht that appears ready for her next adventure. Pacific 38s rarely come to market and continue to attract buyers seeking a proven offshore design with character, capability and genuine blue-water credentials. Early viewing is strongly recommended for anyone seeking a serious cruising yacht at a very realistic asking price.
