NEW LATITUDES is a one-owner Outbound 44, delivered new in 2005 and cared for by the same owners for 21 years. She has been sailed locally in the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest and is fitted out for offshore excursions.
THE DESIGN
The Outbound 44 was one of the last designs Carl Schumacher drew before passing in 2002. Schumacher was known for designing fast, easily driven boats, and Outbound founder Phil Lambert, a former racer, set him a brief that went against type: a solid-glass, deep-water cruiser with a comfortable motion that would still beat to windward and make fast passages. The result is a long waterline (40'3"), moderate beam, weight kept low and away from the ends, and a powerful double-headsail rig balanced by a 10,000 lb lead keel.
Cruising World's Alvah Simon saw a solid 8 knots close to the wind in only 14 knots of breeze. SAILING Magazine's John Kretschmer tested the boat in 15–22 knots on the Chesapeake and went past 8 knots reaching. He described the cabin underway as "like stepping into a library" and called the boat "a high-quality, bluewater cruiser that performs brilliantly." At a displacement/length ratio of about 190, the Outbound sits alongside performance cruisers like the J/42 and X-442, yet it carries 200 gallons of water and 160 of fuel, low in the keel.
Outbound built these boats semi-custom, and no two interiors are alike. The model's standing is shown by the fact that Outbound reintroduced the 44 in 2024 to mark the company's 25th anniversary.
WHY "New Latitudes"
NEW LATITUDES is ready for the Inside Passage, the Salish Sea or an offshore adventure without a long refit list first. Viewing by appointment in Sidney, BC.
A recent 2025 survey found no safety deficiencies and no other deficiencies needing attention. The survey noted that the vessel shows "much newer than she is," with "low hours on the machinery," and called her "well outfitted for local and offshore sailing with many extras."
Experienced sailors know the added safety that comes with good sailing performance. The ability to sail off a lee shore, shorten a passage to within the available weather window, or safely maneuver through seas are critical safety concerns that should not be overlooked. Some builders have taken to quoting race results as a testament to performance. Don't be fooled. Handicap corrected times don't tell the story. When selecting a cruising yacht the issue is elapsed time .. ie. how long was the yacht at sea. Equally important is having the comfort required to avoid fatigue when heading offshore. A dry and comfortable cockpit, good visibility, and a forgiving motion are essential for a safe and enjoyable passage.
The Outbound 44 was designed by the late Carl Schumacher (1949-2002), who successfully combined the moderate displacement required for cruising comfort with an efficient underbody needed to beat the weather, upwind performance, and excellent control.
Arrangement: The interior includes forward portside pullman double berth, extensive storage to starboard and in the forepeak, vanity, sink, and heated wet locker in forepeak, large L-shaped dinette with settee opposite both designed to be used as sea berths, U-shaped Galley with Corian counters 2" fiddles, and Force 10 stove/oven. Aft of the galley is a port facing chart table and inside access to the lazarette. To starboard is a head with large stall shower and large double quarter cabin. Outbound interiors are typically custom, and both teak and cherry are available, this vessel opting for teak. No two Outbound 44s are the same.
The interior is satin-varnished teak matched to a teak-and-holly sole. Every floorboard locks down, and drawers and louvered doors have positive latches. The semi-raised saloon has large windows that make it bright, there are handholds throughout, and the three-step companionway (19" wide) is easy to use in a seaway. She has two cabins and sleeps six, counting the saloon settees.
PRIMARY STATEROOM (forward): Pullman queen berth to port with four large drawers and lift-up storage underneath, thick foam mattress, twin reading lights, and sliding-door lockers outboard. To starboard are two cedar-lined hanging lockers with lighting, a mirrored vanity and five drawers. Overhead hatch, two dorades, four opening ports, 110V outlets and a lockable privacy door.
FORWARD VANITY / WET LOCKER: Outbound converted this space at the factory. There is a vanity with sink and mirrored cabinet, a heated wet locker, floor-to-ceiling deep storage and a folding teak seat.
SALOON: A 7' long L-shaped dinette to port has a fold down and fold out bulkhead stored table and an adjustable-height cocktail table. The 7' long settee to starboard has a fold-down drinks/card table and doubles as a sea berth. Lee cloths are fitted. There are bookshelves and lockers above both settees and storage behind and beneath them. House batteries and inverter are mounted under the starboard settee, providing easy access.
GALLEY: U-shaped to port so the cook stays braced at sea. Corian counters, coved edges with deep 2" fiddles, a double stainless sink with pull-out faucet, and foot pumps for fresh and salt water. Force 10 three-burner stove with oven and broiler, gimballed, with crash bar and cook's belt, plus a butcher-block cover. 9.5 cu ft top-loading refrigerator and a separate freezer in the workshop, each unit running its own 12V CoolBlue compressor. Roll-top microwave cabinet (used for storage) and a large pantry, 5 drawers, slide out garbage bin, and large dedicated food pantry.
NAVIGATION STATION: Side-facing, raised to counter height and enlarged by the owners so it doubles as galley prep space. Three drawers, a swing-away stool, a top-opening chart table and a hinged 40-breaker panel. The Axiom+ 12 plotter, VHF, SSB, sat phone and EPIRB are all within reach, and the station sits right beside the companionway for talking with the helm.
HEAD (Starboard): Seamless molded fiberglass with a Corian counter and stainless sink. Large separate stall shower with seat and hand shower. Raritan PH-II manual head with holding tank and Y-valve. Sited at the companionway, so it also works as a wet locker for foul-weather gear.
GUEST CABIN (aft, starboard): 48" double berth, hanging locker, closed shelving, two drawers, two additional cabinets with sliding doors, and an added handhold. Three opening ports and an overhead hatch, all screened.
WORKSHOP / UTILITY ROOM: This is the room that sets the Outbound apart. You reach it from the nav station or through the cockpit seat, and it has standing headroom at a workbench, drawers, bins and shelving for tools and spares. It houses the refrigeration compressors, freezer, watermaker and provides space for a permanent genset or portable genset. It also provides excellent access to the shaft seal, engine battery, heater, and steering quadrant.
VENTILATION: Ten opening Newfound Metals ports and eight Lewmar Ocean hatches, all screened, plus a flush hatch to the sail locker. Five dorades with closures and screened covers.
Deck: Baltex cored deck with molded nonskid. Foredeck bulwark, large ergonomic cockpit, molded dodger coaming, wide side decks, walk through transom, large aft lazarette, huge forward sail locker. 30" high stainless steel stanchions, bow and cockpit pulpits.
Cockpit: T-Shaped with 6' seats for sleeping outside or entertaining. Ergonomically designed for maximum comfort both at the dock or fighting a gale. Large lazarette can be accessed from the cockpit or the cabin. No bridge deck and a 3 step companionway make for easy and safe access to and from the cockpit. Dedicated liferaft stowage under the helm seat for easy deployment by the smallest crew member.
Rig: Keel-stepped white Charleston double-spreader aluminum mast, 1x19 continuous standing rigging, masthead double-headsail configuration with a removable inner forestay. The rig is inspected every year by Blackline Marine (most recently in 2026).
Sails (all Hood):
Engine: Yanmar diesel with unmatched engine access under the hinged companionway and through lift out side panels. Excellent space for all other machinery under the cockpit, easily maintained with the lazarette open for light and ventilation.
Electrical: 110V and 12 Volt systems throughout. All wiring is Ancor tinned copper for maximum corrosion resistance. Vessel includes a Heart Interface Inverter/Charger, galvanic isolator, Link 10 battery monitor, four 8D batteries in house bank, 1 group 27 engine cranking battery, wired for large output alternator and 100 square feet of copper SSB ground plane molded into the hull.
