2004 DRAGONFLY 920 EXTREME TRIMARAN - HULL No. 100

‘WINGS of FREEDOM’

Vivid Blue Marine Yacht Brokers are delighted to present a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most exhilarating and ingenious fast-cruising yachts of her size.

Wings of Freedom, Hull No.100, combines the extraordinary speed, stability and light-air performance of the Dragonfly 920 Extreme with genuine cruising accommodation and Quorning’s celebrated Swing Wing folding system — reducing her beam from an immense 7.80m under sail to just 3.20m for marina berthing.

With only two owners from new, she presents exceptionally well and benefits from 2023 standing rigging, a 2023 mainsail, two spinnakers and a recently serviced Honda 15hp four-stroke (new in 2020).

Perhaps most unusually, she is accompanied by an exceptional documentary history including inter alia her original Quorning invoice, Builder’s Certificate, ownership trail and documented UK VAT payment.

• ONLY TWO OWNERS FROM NEW

• 2023 STANDING RIGGING • 2024 MAINSAIL • TWO SPINNAKERS

• 7.80M SAILING BEAM • FOLDS TO JUST 3.20M

• RECENTLY SERVICED HONDA 15HP FOUR-STROKE

• HULL No.100 • FULL PROVENANCE • UK VAT PAID & DOCUMENTED

The Dragonfly 920 Extreme is one of those yachts that is difficult to compare directly with a conventional 30-footer. She combines genuine high-performance sailing with remarkably straightforward handling, practical cruising accommodation, extremely shallow draft and Dragonfly's celebrated Swing Wing folding system.

This particular boat is Hull No. 100, built by Quorning Boats ApS of Denmark in 2004, and is especially attractive from a brokerage perspective because of the unusually complete documentary history accompanying her.

She has had only two owners from new, with the present owner having purchased her in 2009. The original purchase invoice, No. 2081, evidences VAT payment, and Bills of Sale are available covering the boat's complete ownership history.

She is registered on the UK Small Ships Register (SSR) and is accompanied by an excellent portfolio of original documentation, certification, invoices and supporting records.

Important recent expenditure includes replacement wire standing rigging in 2023 by Holman Rigging of Chichester, with supporting invoices, and the majority of running rigging replaced between 2020 and 2026. Her Honda 15hp four-stroke outboard has also been recently serviced (new 2020).

For somebody seeking a serious fast cruiser rather than simply a weekend multihull, Hull No. 100 deserves close attention.

It is worth noting that later published Dragonfly specifications quote somewhat higher standard weights. For Hull No. 100, we would use the contemporaneous original builder's documentation supplied with the boat as the primary reference rather than applying figures retrospectively from later production boats.

THE 920 EXTREME

The Extreme was introduced in 2003 as the higher-performance development of the established Dragonfly 920.

Quorning gave the Extreme wider curved beams, longer and more buoyant floats, a taller rig, increased sail area and deeper high-performance appendages. Dragonfly themselves describe the Extreme as approximately 15% faster than the standard Touring version.

That additional performance did not turn the 920 into an impractical racing machine. She remains a genuine cruiser capable of sleeping four, with a separate heads compartment, galley and substantial cockpit, while the controls and folding system make her entirely manageable by a small crew.

Contemporary testing recorded performance well into the high teens and above 20 knots in suitable conditions, illustrating just how much capability is available from a yacht only 9.2m long.

SWING WING SYSTEM

The Dragonfly Swing Wing system is central to the appeal of the 920.

Under sail the floats are fully extended to give the Extreme her impressive 7.80m beam, stability and sail-carrying power.

On entering protected harbour waters the floats can be folded aft alongside the centre hull, reducing the beam to approximately 3.20m.

This has a number of very practical advantages:

• marina berthing becomes far easier than the sailing beam might suggest;

• access to conventional marina spaces becomes possible;

• the boat can be manoeuvred through narrower harbour facilities;

• winter storage becomes considerably easier;

• the owner enjoys the stability and performance of a wide trimaran without permanently accepting its full sailing beam.

It is an ingenious solution and remains one of the defining features of the Dragonfly range.

SHALLOW-WATER & DRYING CAPABILITY

Another exceptional feature of the 920 Extreme is her 0.45m minimum draft with the centreboard raised. That is barely 18 inches.

For UK cruising this is a serious advantage rather than simply an interesting specification.

It allows the boat to explore shallow estuaries, creeks, anchorages and upper reaches that are inaccessible to most performance yachts of comparable length. In areas such as Chichester Harbour, Poole Harbour, the East Coast rivers, the West Country and many parts of Scotland, that considerably expands the available cruising ground.

The centreboard is raised for shallow-water work and the rudder arrangement is likewise designed with shallow-water operation in mind.

Unlike a conventional deep-fin yacht, there is no fixed keel projecting 1.5–2m beneath the hull. On a suitable firm and reasonably level bottom the Dragonfly can therefore be deliberately dried out or brought very close inshore. Contemporary testing of the 920 specifically highlighted its ability to dry out and effectively "park" in very shallow water.

As with any yacht, deliberate drying should only be undertaken after assessing the nature and level of the bottom, tidal range, wave action and wind direction. Nevertheless, the combination of high performance with less than half a metre of minimum draft is one of the 920 Extreme's most compelling cruising attributes.

RIG

Fractional performance rig

Standing rigging: Replaced 2023 by Holman Rigging, Chichester. The backstay tensioning lines were replaced in 2025.

Running rigging: Majority replaced between 2020 and 2026.

Mast: Tall Extreme-version rig

Bowsprit: Approx. 1.75m

Mainsail handling: Fully battened mainsail

Furling headsail arrangement

Asymmetric spinnaker equipment

The 2023 standing-rigging replacement is an important point on a boat of this type and age, particularly for a prospective UK purchaser or insurer. Supporting invoices are available.

The replacement of the running rigging in 2026 further reinforces the impression of a boat whose important sailing systems have been kept current rather than simply presented with original equipment.

SAILS

The present sail wardrobe includes:

Mainsail – North Sails 2024 - fully battened.

North Sails jib / headsail – 2015

Two asymmetric spinnakers (different sizes for differing wind strengths/wind angles, larger sail with snuffer)

The original Extreme sail plan was substantial for a yacht of this length.

Original specification:

Mainsail: approximately 44m²

Standard genoa: approximately 26–27m²

Maximum asymmetric spinnaker: approximately 90m²

Bowsprit: approximately 1.75m

The combination of relatively light displacement, substantial sail area and 7.80m sailing beam explains much of the boat's extraordinary acceleration and reaching performance.

ENGINE

Honda 15hp four-stroke outboard. New in 2020 with electric tilt, electric start and battery charging capability.

Recently serviced.

The 15hp installation represents the maximum engine output quoted in the original 920 Extreme specification and provides useful reserve power for harbour manoeuvring and motoring in adverse conditions.

The outboard arrangement also keeps the underwater profile uncomplicated and avoids the drag, weight and maintenance associated with a conventional diesel shaft or saildrive installation.

TANKAGE

Fuel: 20 litres

Fresh water: 60 litres

ACCOMMODATION

The interior of the Dragonfly 920 demonstrates just how effectively Quorning used the relatively narrow centre hull.

The accommodation is conceived for genuine cruising rather than simply providing a token racing interior.

The layout provides four berths, with additional cockpit accommodation possible beneath an enclosure where fitted.

• forward sleeping area;

• saloon seating/berths;

• galley area;

• separate heads compartment;

• useful internal storage;

• substantial cockpit;

• spray hood and zip-on full cockpit enclosure (three doors and a rear opening flap - acts as a Bimini when sides rolled up).

• cockpit lockers and external storage.

The slender centre hull inevitably means that the interior does not have the beam of a modern 30ft monohull, but that is also fundamental to the Dragonfly's low resistance and exceptional performance. The result is accommodation which is practical for a couple or small family while preserving the sailing characteristics for which the boat was designed.

DECK & COCKPIT

The cockpit is unusually large for a yacht of this overall length and forms a significant part of the living space aboard.

Wide trampolines between the centre hull and floats give enormous usable deck area when sailing, while the folding beam structure provides secure attachment and mooring points.

The asymmetric spinnakers are handled from the forward trampoline areas, while most routine sail controls are brought within reach of the cockpit.

The result is a boat that can deliver extremely serious performance without demanding a large racing crew.

INSTRUMENTATION & NAVIGATION

• Raymarine e97 HybridTouch chartplotter, interfaced with the onboard instrumentation

• Tacktick wireless instruments providing wind speed, wind direction, depth, heading and boat speed, with interfaced information from the chartplotter

• Garmin GPS providing a useful independent standby navigation unit

CONSTRUCTION & BUOYANCY

Dragonfly construction is deliberately light but sophisticated, using composite construction to achieve a strong structure without unnecessary displacement.

The original Builder's Certificate for Hull No. 100 describes the vessel as "unsinkable" and notes that the sandwich construction itself provides reserve buoyancy.

The centre hull and floats incorporate buoyancy arrangements intended to preserve flotation following serious damage.

This should not of course be interpreted as making any yacht immune from the consequences of collision or capsize, but it is an important element of the original Dragonfly design philosophy.

SOLAR POWER/TENDER/LAY-UP CRADLE

The boat benefits from a 60W solar panel permanently fitted to the foredeck controlled by a Sunware Isolar control box.

There is also a winter layup cradle included with the boat.

Also included is a Zodiac dinghy with pump, seat and oars.
